Building Intergenerational Connections at Brookridge

In a world where different age groups often live in separate circles, intergenerational relationships have become a powerful way to strengthen community, purpose and wellbeing. At Brookridge Life Plan Community, we believe that older adults and children have much to gain from each other, and we are putting that belief into action.

Why Intergenerational Relationships Matter

Research shows that when older adults and children engage in shared, meaningful activities, the benefits are significant for both groups. For older adults, intergenerational programs can reduce social isolation, boost self-esteem and support cognitive health. For instance, one review notes that intergenerational programs helped older participants improve emotional well-being, involvement and self-esteem. Children, meanwhile, gain empathy, improved social skills and enhanced respect for older adults. Beyond individual benefit, intergenerational models foster more inclusive communities and reduce age-segregation.

Brookridge’s New Intergenerational Initiative

Brookridge, a ThriveMore community, is co-launching the new Imprints Cares‐operated “Center for Thriving Children” on our campus, set to open later this year. This center will serve children from infancy through age five and will offer opportunities for Brookridge residents to interact with children on a daily basis. These exchanges may include shared activities, classroom visits, outdoor play, special events and informal interactions that occur naturally when both groups share a connected campus.

Shared site models, where childcare and senior living services are housed in the same location, have been shown to strengthen community ties, create meaningful experiences for all ages and support efficiency in care delivery.

What Residents Gain

At Brookridge, residents will be able to:

  • read and play alongside children
  • share stories, hobbies and life experiences
  • participate in volunteer style engagement that encourages purpose
  • enjoy social connection that supports emotional and cognitive wellbeing

Studies show that older adults who take part in intergenerational programs often experience increased joy, a stronger sense of purpose and greater social engagement. For individuals living in a Life Plan Community, these connections complement the broader focus on whole person wellness.

What Children And Families Gain

Children in intergenerational environments develop stronger empathy, communication skills and confidence. They learn to connect with older adults who bring patience, encouragement and rich personal history. Families benefit from access to high quality childcare in a setting where community matters. The Center for Thriving Children will serve Brookridge staff families and the Winston Salem public, creating a true community hub on campus.

How This Aligns With Brookridge’s Mission

Since 1951, ThriveMore has operated faith based, not for profit senior living communities guided by purpose, dignity and service. At Brookridge, the addition of the Center for Thriving Children reflects a long-term commitment to creating an environment where people of all ages grow and thrive.

Brookridge offers maintenance free independent living, wellness programs, assisted living, memory care, rehabilitation and skilled nursing services. Integrating children into everyday life enriches the culture of the community and supports meaningful engagement for residents across all care levels.

What This Means For Your Future
